Stannah adds to their family of platform lifts
Providing solutions for access in the built environment is our business. We introduced our first cabin platform lift in 2009 and have since installed more than 100 cabin platform lifts. Today we have broadened our range to manufacture a cabin platform lift that uses a hydraulic drive as an ideal, cost-effective choice for low-rise situations.

Our NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus is a top-of-the-range version of our original hydraulically driven part-enclosed Midilift SL, but with the addition of a full height cabin. We haven’t lost any of the platform space as light rays and safety beams, around the entrance, protect the traveller without restricting the floor area.

It’s easy to install in its own structure, needs a very minimal pit of 70mm for level entry or can be supplied with a ramp and requires headroom of just 2500mm. The lift’s drive system is neatly tucked away in a small cabinet that needs very little space. Of course, our new platform lift complies with all the latest manufacturing and safety standards and is available directly from our manufacturing base in the UK.

Hunter Douglas

Hunter Douglas contribute to BREEAM rated college building in Huddersfield

Kirklees Technical College is due to open a brand new, state of the art campus at the Waterfront Quarter in Huddersfield.

The £74m development will replace the New North Road site with a nine storey learning centre for thousands of students. The development covers 24,000 square metres.

Hunter Douglas were approached by the project developers with an interest in specifying their Quadroclad facade system. The aluminium panels were installed horizontally with integrated recessed aluminium windows.

Architects Broadway Malyan designed the 'stepped' ribbon windows in the new learning centre. This meant that Hunter Douglas had to supply ribbon runs of windows, with random steps of elevation.

The centre will feature four training kitchens, six business suites, an aircraft cabin simulator and a fully equipped gym. The building has achieved a BREEAM rating of excellent.

The panels and windows used in the build were specified in an anodised finish to guarantee a durable, low maintenance end product.

As one of only thirteen colleges in England given funding by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the campus will offer first class education and training opportunities.

Vice Principal, Melanie Brooke said: "The new campus has been created with one thing in mind - providing students with 21st century learning facilities and resources. All our decisions have been taken with the best interests of learners at the very heart."

Eurocell Branches Become Leading Light In Rooflights

Eurocell has unveiled a range of market-leading rooflights that increase the comfort of buildings and are fully compliant with Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of fuel and power).

Available to order in all Eurocell branches, the rooflights range provides customers with an effective method of maximising natural light inside buildings – one of the best ways of saving energy and reducing carbon footprints.

Fully compatible with all common flat roof waterproofing systems and can be used on new or refurbishment projects and an ‘all thermoplastic construction’ means that the rooflights have a high resistance to impact and weathering, along with long-term low maintenance properties. The extruded white PVC-U kerb can be fitted directly to the roof deck for ease of installation.

The rooflights are formed from enhanced UV protected polycarbonate with vented air spaces that help achieve a U value of 1.8W/m²K, to satisfy Part L requirements. They are offered with either fixed, worm-gear or hit and miss openings. The four part tamper-resistant fixings provide building owners with a safe, secure installation.

Eurocell rooflights have a robust wall thickness to ensure overall strength, whilst a weather seal on all opening rooflights maintains weather tightness. A special ‘key’ finish to the PVC-U kerb assists adhesion of the roof membrane and the PVC-U kerb is torch–on system friendly.

GREENER, LEANER, CLEANER - Swish Building Products Reduces Carbon Footprint for Fourth Consecutive Year

As part of its continuous commitment to improving environmental performance, Swish Building Products has once again cut its carbon footprint; seeing a decrease of 26% since 2008.

2012 saw the company achieve the equivalent of Carbon Trust Level One carbon reduction from 2011 of 8.82% across electricity, gas and heater fuel uses (Fixed Utilities).

The low maintenance building products specialist cut 29% from its water usage and 10% from its electricity consumption in 2012. The Company generated 255 tonnes of general waste over the year; including pallets, shrink-wrap, and paper; all of which was sorted and recycled, with only 2% going to landfill.

Greg Wilde of Swish Building Products said: “Gaining our ISO 14001 accreditation in 2007 allowed us to focus on, and make year-on-year improvements in energy efficiency and water usage. These best practice measures continue to make good business sense, and remain a fundamental part of our business strategy.

Since our base-line year of 2008 our reduction in electricity is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 900 UK homes! We have also cut our space heating (oil and gas) by an average of 50% and are 11% more fuel efficient when delivering our products to our customers.”

ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF CADETS

Wernick Buildings have provided brand new Joint Cadet Centres with modern facilities for the Greater London Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (GLRFCA) in Twickenham and Sidcup.

Both local cadet units vacated what had become unsuitable accommodation and the new buildings aim to serve the needs of both Air Training Corps (ATC) and Army Cadet Force (ACF) organisations. The joint occupancy ATC and ACF accommodation was split to keep the organisations’ training requirements separate, and each modular building accommodates a total space which covers 280 square metres.

Designed to achieve high level BREEAM scores the buildings include sustainable features such as photovoltaic panels with internal inverters for electrical supply. The modular building design is to be used as a template for any new building that may be built in the future. For ease of maintenance a metro tile roof, and Duraclad timber effect cladding was also provided.

Both facilities house two secure stores to safely contain gun chests and the Twickenham centre even has a purpose built shooting range which required three metre deep excavations.

The official opening of the Twickenham centre in October attracted local MP Vince Cable who attended as guest of honour to unveil the new building.

AIRFLOW HAS CONTINUED TO EXPAND ITS MECHANICAL VENTILATION WITH HEAT RECOVERY (MVHR) RANGE WITH A NEW RANGE OF BASIC MVHR MODELS IDEALLY SUITED TO THE RESIDENTIAL HOUSING MARKET

The Duplexvent BV300 is the smallest of the new units, fitting neatly in a standard 600mm wide cupboard. This neat size also makes installation and servicing easier as the installer can fit the unit and maintain easy access to the G3 supply and extract air filters.

A backward curved EC motor can achieve a specific fan power of 0.54W/l/s whilst five air flow settings are easily adjusted to suit the needs of the dwellings helping achieve up to 93% heat recovery. Advanced controls also offer a summer ventilation mode, frost protection and a built-in humidity sensor as well as a filter maintenance indicator and an external cut-off switch.

For larger residential properties, the Duplexvent BV400 offers many of the same benefits as the BV units but with some additional elements specifically for larger properties, including an SFP of 0.45W/l/s and a thermal efficiency of 93%.

The new door features a 65mm thick steel door leaf mounted on a composite frame. This frame adds to the insulation value since it offers a better thermal break and the thicker door is filled with rigid CFC free PU foam for both strength and insulation.

Hotels

However, as with any building that is open to the public on a regular basis, hotels are, to varying degrees, subject to many of the health, safety and well-being considerations already mentioned for other buildings. From a practical perspective, the jamb-mounted closer can contribute towards sound insulation. Tests undertaken for architects on one high profile hotel project showed that the Powermatic® door closer offers some advantage over other concealed closing devices, as installation requires minimal morticing of the door to accommodate its body. Furthermore, the absence of protruding mechanical control arms and surface mounted boxes means that a jamb-mounted door closer offers an ideal solution in situations where door clearance is restricted, such as with 90° reveals. In addition, Powermatic®’s convenient position within the door facilitates quick and easy fine-tuning, unhindered by the restricted headroom experienced in some guestroom reveals.

Commercial
In the commercial world, one area in which the jamb-mounted door closer is particularly favoured by designers and their clients is in raised floor situations where floor mounted door closing devices can be costly.

Housing
As with educational establishments and other public buildings, the risk of damage through vandalism is ever-present in private and social housing developments. Opting for jamb-mounted door closers in housing projects, particularly homes in multiple occupation, apartments and flats, offers significant benefits in costs, convenience and safety, both to those responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of properties as well as for the residents themselves.

Heritage and refurbishment
