Stannah Lifts Ltd

Our range of cabin platform lifts has just got bigger

Stannah adds to their family of platform lifts
Providing solutions for access in the built environment is our business. We introduced our first cabin platform lift in 2009 and have since installed more than 100 cabin platform lifts. Today we have broadened our range to manufacture a cabin platform lift that uses a hydraulic drive as an ideal, cost-effective choice for low-rise situations.

Our NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus is a top-of-the-range version of our original hydraulically driven part-enclosed Midilift SL, but with the addition of a full height cabin. We haven’t lost any of the platform space as light rays and safety beams, around the entrance, protect the traveller without restricting the floor area.

It’s easy to install in its own structure, needs a very minimal pit of 70mm for level entry or can be supplied with a ramp and requires headroom of just 2500mm. The lift’s drive system is neatly tucked away in a small cabinet that needs very little space. Of course, our new platform lift complies with all the latest manufacturing and safety standards and is available directly from our manufacturing base in the UK.

The best bit?

The NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus looks and operates just like a conventional passenger lift giving your building fabulous looks without breaking the budget.

Welcome to our extended family of platform lifts.

Hunter Douglas

Hunter Douglas contribute to BREEAM rated college building in Huddersfield

Kirklees Technical College is due to open a brand new, state of the art campus at the Waterfront Quarter in Huddersfield.

The £74m development will replace the New North Road site with a nine storey learning centre for thousands of students. The development covers 24,000 square metres.

Hunter Douglas were approached by the project developers with an interest in specifying their Quadroclad facade system. The aluminium panels were installed horizontally with integrated recessed aluminium windows.

Architects Broadway Malyan designed the 'stepped' ribbon windows in the new learning centre. This meant that Hunter Douglas had to supply ribbon runs of windows, with random steps of elevation.

The centre will feature four training kitchens, six business suites, an aircraft cabin simulator and a fully equipped gym. The building has achieved a BREEAM rating of excellent.

The panels and windows used in the build were specified in an anodised finish to guarantee a durable, low maintenance end product.

As one of only thirteen colleges in England given funding by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the campus will offer first class education and training opportunities.

Vice Principal, Melanie Brooke said: "The new campus has been created with one thing in mind - providing students with 21st century learning facilities and resources. All our decisions have been taken with the best interests of learners at the very heart."

Hunter Douglas pride themselves on their innovative, eco-friendly building solutions. The Quadroclad facade system protects the building envelope whilst offering a distinctive, modern aesthetic.

Eurocell Branches Become Leading Light In Rooflights

Eurocell has unveiled a range of market-leading rooflights that increase the comfort of buildings and are fully compliant with Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of fuel and power).

Available to order in all Eurocell branches, the rooflights range provides customers with an effective method of maximising natural light inside buildings – one of the best ways of saving energy and reducing carbon footprints.

Fully compatible with all common flat roof waterproofing systems and can be used on new or refurbishment projects and an ‘all thermoplastic construction’ means that the rooflights have a high resistance to impact and weathering, along with long-term low maintenance properties. The extruded white PVC-U kerb can be fitted directly to the roof deck for ease of installation.

The rooflights are formed from enhanced UV protected polycarbonate with vented air spaces that help achieve a U value of 1.8W/m²K, to satisfy Part L requirements. They are offered with either fixed, worm-gear or hit and miss openings. The four part tamper-resistant fixings provide building owners with a safe, secure installation.

Eurocell rooflights have a robust wall thickness to ensure overall strength, whilst a weather seal on all opening rooflights maintains weather tightness. A special ‘key’ finish to the PVC-U kerb assists adhesion of the roof membrane and the PVC-U kerb is torch–on system friendly.

Chris Coxon, Head of Marketing at Eurocell, said: “We expect our new rooflight range to open up a number of market opportunities for our branch customers. Being a tough, Building Regulations-compliant solution means that customers can have confidence that they will perform over the long-term.”

The new range should create sales opportunities for Eurocell branch customers in a wide range of sectors. In housing, rooflights are increasingly being used on flat-roof extensions, and hallways as an additional feature to increase comfort. In Education, Building Bulletin 90: Lighting Design for Schools offers specific guidance on natural lighting and rooflights. It recommends that during daylight hours, natural lighting should be the main source of illumination.

The ability of Eurocell rooflights to increase natural light levels inside all buildings means that they are particularly suitable for communal spaces in corridors, atriums and reception areas within both the public and private sector. They are commonly used in buildings with IT equipment as the glare from windows can make it difficult to read PC screens. Products can be delivered in two parts for easy handling and more efficient installation.

Eurocell Building Plastics branches offer a range of more than 4,000 quality building plastics products. This includes PVC-U roofline, rainwater systems, interior skirting and cladding products, along with window finishing trims, doors, conservatories, and hand tools. Adding rooflights to the range extends the one-stop-shop offer for customers.

With 125+ Eurocell Building Plastics branches nationally, the network has become an essential destination for high quality, excellent service and value for money with both trade and DIY customers, with FREE delivery in 24 hours available*.

Rooflights can be ordered over the trade counter in Eurocell branches, or by calling 08000 77 88 88. For more information on the rooflights range, visit: www.eurocell.co.uk/rooflights

* On orders over £100. Mainland UK only.

GREENER, LEANER, CLEANER - Swish Building Products Reduces Carbon Footprint for Fourth Consecutive Year

As part of its continuous commitment to improving environmental performance, Swish Building Products has once again cut its carbon footprint; seeing a decrease of 26% since 2008.

2012 saw the company achieve the equivalent of Carbon Trust Level One carbon reduction from 2011 of 8.82% across electricity, gas and heater fuel uses (Fixed Utilities).

The low maintenance building products specialist cut 29% from its water usage and 10% from its electricity consumption in 2012. The Company generated 255 tonnes of general waste over the year; including pallets, shrink-wrap, and paper; all of which was sorted and recycled, with only 2% going to landfill.

Greg Wilde of Swish Building Products said: “Gaining our ISO 14001 accreditation in 2007 allowed us to focus on, and make year-on-year improvements in energy efficiency and water usage. These best practice measures continue to make good business sense, and remain a fundamental part of our business strategy.

Since our base-line year of 2008 our reduction in electricity is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 900 UK homes! We have also cut our space heating (oil and gas) by an average of 50% and are 11% more fuel efficient when delivering our products to our customers.”

As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of PVC-U and PVC-Ue products, and as part of the Epwin Group, Swish Building Products is at the forefront of post-industrial and post-consumer recycling in its sector. It’s guttering and pipe products, for example, are manufactured from 84% recycled material, saving 70% in CO2 generation when compared to virgin material.

The company was among a pioneering group of building product suppliers to secure the environmental management standard ISO14001 in 2007 to add to its quality management standard ISO9001. The occupational health and safety OHSAS18001 followed in 2009.

Swish Building Products is the first and only roofline and cladding manufacturer to have gained BES6001 Responsible Sourcing Certification ‘Very Good’ for fascia and cladding systems. Consequently, it is also the only manufacturer to offer Maximum points for Mat2 and Mat3 for roofline and cladding under the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Wernick Buildings have provided brand new Joint Cadet Centres with modern facilities for the Greater London Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (GLRFCA) in Twickenham and Sidcup.

Both local cadet units vacated what had become unsuitable accommodation and the new buildings aim to serve the needs of both Air Training Corps (ATC) and Army Cadet Force (ACF) organisations. The joint occupancy ATC and ACF accommodation was split to keep the organisations’ training requirements separate, and each modular building accommodates a total space which covers 280 square metres.

Designed to achieve high level BREEAM scores the buildings include sustainable features such as photovoltaic panels with internal inverters for electrical supply. The modular building design is to be used as a template for any new building that may be built in the future. For ease of maintenance a metro tile roof, and Duraclad timber effect cladding was also provided.

Both facilities house two secure stores to safely contain gun chests and the Twickenham centre even has a purpose built shooting range which required three metre deep excavations.

The official opening of the Twickenham centre in October attracted local MP Vince Cable who attended as guest of honour to unveil the new building.

The Duplexvent BV300 is the smallest of the new units, fitting neatly in a standard 600mm wide cupboard. This neat size also makes installation and servicing easier as the installer can fit the unit and maintain easy access to the G3 supply and extract air filters.

A backward curved EC motor can achieve a specific fan power of 0.54W/l/s whilst five air flow settings are easily adjusted to suit the needs of the dwellings helping achieve up to 93% heat recovery. Advanced controls also offer a summer ventilation mode, frost protection and a built-in humidity sensor as well as a filter maintenance indicator and an external cut-off switch.

For larger residential properties, the Duplexvent BV400 offers many of the same benefits as the BV units but with some additional elements specifically for larger properties, including an SFP of 0.45W/l/s and a thermal efficiency of 93%.

The new Hörmann ThermoPro Plus entrance doors offer even better insulation values while maintaining the high levels of security, ease of use and quality for which the unique steel faced ThermoPro doors are renowned.

The new door features a 65mm thick steel door leaf mounted on a composite frame. This frame adds to the insulation value since it offers a better thermal break and the thicker door is filled with rigid CFC free PU foam for both strength and insulation.

Not only does the door leaf contribute to enhanced insulation but the 80mm aluminium door frame also has PU foam infill and a thermal break. Triple seals on the threshold strip and another thermal break all help to maximise insulation to give a fitted door with a thermal u value as low as 1.0W/m2K.

Many of the benefits for living green roofs depend on the plant layer being robust and healthy and for that, an annual maintenance regime is essential.

Enviromat have published a white paper entitled “designing for maintenance”. Aimed at architects and specifiers, the document points out ways in which careful design can ensure that the cost of green roof maintenance is kept to an absolute minimum. Simple things like ensuring safe and easy access to the roof, careful choice of plant palette and appropriate irrigation can make a huge difference to the long-term performance of a green roof.

Samuel Heath

Powermatic® controlled, concealed door closers boast an impressive array of fire performance and accessibility credentials: It is CE marked, complies with BS EN 1154 and BS 1634-1 for half hour and one hour fire doors and facilitates compliance with the accessibility requirements of Approved Document M and BS 8300. In addition to its technical performance, as a jamb-mounted, concealed door closer, Powermatic® has become the designer’s choice when it comes to retaining the aesthetics of an interior and is enjoying popularity across the building industry for the many other advantages that concealment delivers. As well as enhanced aesthetics, Powermatic® provides many other practical benefits in the areas of health and safety, economics and even hygiene.

From the aesthetic perspective, the concealed door closer is the automatic choice for those wishing to preserve the appearance of a door and/or interior design, and Samuel; Heath door closers have been at the forefront of the market. Surface mounted door closers feature unsightly control arms and boxes that spoil the appearance of doors and interiors. Being totally invisible when the door is closed, and particularly unobtrusive when the door is open, Powermatic® obviates such issues, providing the designer with the ideal solution where appearance is paramount. The benefits of enhanced aesthetics are recognised not only in high-end, design-conscious interiors, but also in other applications where the sight of mechanical devices can create an undesirable institutionalised, functional atmosphere. In other situations, the benefits of the jamb-mounted, concealed door closer become clearer when one considers the many types of buildings and applications in which the door closer has been used:-

The risk of a door closer being damaged is particularly high in most educational establishments. The protruding arms and control boxes that are so evident with surface mounted door closers can present a very tempting target for the would-be vandal or prankster. The costs of repair and replacement can extend beyond replacing the door closer to repairing or replacing the entire door, and they can be considerable. More worrying, a damaged door closer can render the door useless. The result may only be inconvenience, but in the case of a fire, the potential for disaster is easy to appreciate. The Powermatic® concealed door closer removes much of the temptation and opportunity for vandalism, potentially reducing costs and enhancing the comfort and safety of a building’s occupants. Additionally, whilst not a risk immediately associated with mainstream educational establishments, the risk of door closers being used as a point of ligature might also be a consideration. Recent anecdotal evidence suggests that one education authority replaced overhead door closers throughout all schools with Powermatic® to reduce the risk of self-harm.

Health and care
The healthcare sector draws a similarly broad and varied number of benefits from the use of jamb-mounted concealed door closers, most of which derive from the specifics of each application:- From the safety perspective, in addition to the implications that a vandalised door closer might present, specialist areas of the health sector, such as psychiatric care, demand that particular attention be paid to the safety of vulnerable people. Reduced, or anti, ligature solutions are vital in many such areas, and Powermatic® can make a valuable contribution in reducing the opportunity for self-harm. The door closer’s total concealment when the door is closed is an obvious factor in its anti-ligature credentials, as it reduces the temptation and opportunity for the closer to be used as a point of ligature. However, particularly apposite is the fact that Powermatic® can be mounted within 300mm of the bottom of the door, a height at which harm through ligature is considered impossible in the majority of circumstances. Hygiene and cleanliness are vital in every health establishment. With minimal surface exposure to the environment the jamb-mounted closer attracts very little detritus when in service. This feature and its low mounting height (normally no higher than the centre point of the door) make cleaning procedures and inspection regimes quick, easy and effective. Powermatic® can also make a valuable contribution towards the well-being of a health establishment’s clients. In both frontline health services, and provision of care for the elderly and mentally ill, there is broad recognition that providing a homely, less clinical atmosphere aids recovery and enhances the lives of the service’s consumers. As already mentioned, the concealed door closer can help to create a less institutionalised appearance to interiors, making for a more pleasant, comfortable and welcoming environment.

Enhanced aesthetics are probably the main reason that architects and designers specify Powermatic® controlled, concealed door closers for hotel applications. However, as with any building that is open to the public on a regular basis, hotels are, to varying degrees, subject to many of the health, safety and well-being considerations already mentioned for other buildings. From a practical perspective, the jamb-mounted closer can contribute towards sound insulation. Tests undertaken for architects on one high profile hotel project showed that the Powermatic® door closer offers some advantage over other concealed closing devices, as installation requires minimal morticing of the door to accommodate its body. Furthermore, the absence of protruding mechanical control arms and surface mounted boxes means that a jamb-mounted door closer offers an ideal solution in situations where door clearance is restricted, such as with 90° reveals. In addition, Powermatic®’s convenient position within the door facilitates quick and easy fine-tuning, unhindered by the restricted headroom experienced in some guestroom reveals.

In the commercial world, one area in which the jamb-mounted door closer is particularly favoured by designers and their clients is in raised floor situations where floor mounted door closing devices can be costly.

As with educational establishments and other public buildings, the risk of damage through vandalism is ever-present in private and social housing developments. Opting for jamb-mounted door closers in housing projects, particularly homes in multiple occupation, apartments and flats, offers significant benefits in costs, convenience and safety, both to those responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of properties as well as for the residents themselves.

Heritage and refurbishment
The jamb-mounted, concealed door closer lends itself particularly well to heritage and refurbishment projects where modern fire safety and convenience features need to be introduced, but where the retention of important, often historically significant, features and finishes is vital. The concealed door closer also delivers other practical features: Shaped door heads and the excavation of floors pose challenges for overhead door closers and floor springs respectively. The jamb-mounted door closer provides a simple and extremely effective solution.

Across all of these applications there is, inevitably, some commonality between the benefits that can be obtained through the use of Powermatic® jamb-mounted, concealed door closers. Each project places its own special demands, as do different situations. Considering the needs of clients and occupants of buildings is key to maximising these benefits. Powermatic® door closers offer the performance, reliability and versatility to deliver many benefits, possibly in hitherto unseen circumstances. Further information on Powermatic® can be obtained from perko-powermatic.com, or by contacting Samuel Heath on 0121 766 4200 or sales@samuel-heath.com.
