Heritage Aluminium Rainwater

Heritage Aluminium Rainwater System Chosen For Award-Winning University

Riddel Hall, a landmark Grade B1 listed building forming part of Queens University Belfast, has undergone major redevelopment into a world class Postgraduate and Executive Education Centre. Alumasc’s Heritage Cast Aluminium rainwater system with bespoke hoppers and finish, has helped retain the architectural integrity of the £10m project, which has been Highly Commended in the Conservation Category of both the RICS 2012 Awards and the RSUA Design Awards.

Riddel Hall was established as a hall of residence for female students in 1913 and much effort has been made to ensure the refurbishment remained sympathetic to the original building fabric, including the replacement of its original cast iron rainwater system. The old system had perished and Alumasc Heritage Cast Aluminium system was specified for its ability to replicate the look of the original cast iron system, whilst offering modern performance, longevity and low maintenance.

Alumasc worked closely with Hamilton Architects and the main contractor, Tracey Brothers to ensure the system met every detail of the project’s requirements. The system was complex as the building presented a high number of dormer windows, with many hoppers and downpipes. The architects provided a sample of original components from the building and Alumasc produced 45 replica hoppers, together with with downpipes, earbelts and bracketry which were fixed into position through the original circular openings in the sandstone string courses. Alumasc also produced a special RAL8004m finish in Copper Brown to match the colour of the original rainwater system.

Neil Moore of Hamilton Architects commented: “Every aspect of the refurbishment, including the Aluminium rainwater system, was carefully planned to ensure the success of this first class post-graduate and executive education facility.”

The Heritage range is ideal for traditionally designed buildings and can be used as a direct replacement of cast iron, while offering all the benefits of modern aluminium casting techniques and factory finish. The system has minimal maintenance requirements and is lightweight, durable and easy to handle and fix.

The moulded profile specified for Riddel Hall was one of five profiles that are available in the range, alongside a choice of imperial sizes and RAL colours to suit all projects.

An extensive range of Alumasc’s most popular Aluminium rainwater systems has been made available ex-stock with an unrivalled lead time of 3 days. Alumasc are the only manufacturer to supply their Aluminium Rainwater Systems accredited with BBA Approved Powder Coatings.

Hörmann ThermoPro Entrance Doors now Secured by Design

Hörmann has added a Secured by Design option to 9 styles in it’s ThermoPro Entrance Door range.

Already available to meet the stringent European WK2 security classification the ThermoPro range of contemporary and classic styles of entrance doors feature multi-point locking with a combination of conical swing and security lock bolts that pull the door tightly shut. Three further security bolts on the hinge side make it practically impossible to force the door open.

One of the key elements of the Secure by Design option is a new, even more secure, individually coded lock cylinder that has been designed to resist picking, snapping, bumping or drilling.

As well as being secure, these doors are also stylish and thermally efficient, exceeding the latest standards. The 46 mm door leaf is filled with rigid, CFC free, polyurethane foam leading to high levels of both thermal and acoustic insulation. A choice of triple and double glazed elements that maintain the high thermal efficiency levels are also offered along with a choice of glass to help create the desired look.

Also new for 2011 are two new ribbed entrance door designs and a range of matching side elements and transom lights. The new door designs match the classic M-ribbed sectional garage doors, to add to the wide selection of matching or co-ordinating garage and entrance doors. For a new build, co-ordinating these two elements can create a distinctive look, while for renovation projects a dramatic face-lift can be achieved, while adding thermal efficiency and added security.

The side elements and transom lights not only increase the styling and design options but also bring more light into a building. As you would expect from Hörmann there is no compromise on thermal insulation, as these elements match the low U-values of the entrance doors.

For more information on the ranges of entrance and garage doors available go to www.hormann.co.uk, email info@hormann.co.uk or call 01530 513050.

Hunter Douglas

Hunter Douglas Brings Georgian Sackville Street into 21st Century

An office block on Sackville Street in London has recently undergone redevelopment. Given the building's location within the Mayfair Conservation area and its proximity to several listed buildings, the design of the new building had to be carefully considered.

Worth over £14m, the office block now features 40,000 sq ft of office space, two 2 bedroom flats and one 3 bedroom flat, Sackville Street is home to several Georgian buildings. The new office block is sensitive to this period, displaying traditional build materials in a contemporary manner.

J M Architects approached Hunter Douglas with a view to specifying their Quadroclad rainscreen panels. Quadroclad QC25-10 aluminium rainscreen panels were installed vertically with integrated aluminium flush windows. The use of fully integrated windows reduces the amount of support components required for the panels, due to attachment of the panels to the (system designed) outer window frame.

They have a hidden 'Block Window' open-in vent which, when viewed from the outside appears only as a fixed light window. This has the effect of maintaining slim 'sight lines'. For the Sackville Street development, the open-in vents are used for accessing the outside of the windows for cleaning purposes rather than for ventilation.

As the single source supplier of the three major facade components for the project, Hunter Douglas were able to ensure that the installation went smoothly. This also minimised the potential for interface detailing problems, which could have arisen if the developer had chosen to work with separate suppliers.

Hunter Douglas work closely with architects and builders from specification to installation. With a dedication to sustainable practices, the facade specialists pride themselves on their innovative, eco-friendly building solutions. This high profile project on Sackville Street challenged the experts at Hunter Douglas to produce and install a solution which was both modern and complementary to the surrounding Georgian architecture.

Samuel Heath

Door closer enhances safety in education sector

Finding a door closer that offers the performance and reliability demanded by its application whilst delivering the lower opening forces essential to meet the requirements of the Equality Act has always been a challenge for specifiers and facilities managers alike.

Fortunately, Samuel Heath’s Powermatic® controlled, concealed door closer provides the solution as well as delivering a host of other benefits that enable ease of access to be combined with aesthetics, performance and reliability.

Key to its ability to assure ease of access is the fact that the closer can enable a door to meet the opening force requirements of Approved Document M of the Building Regulations (Access and use of buildings) and BS 8300.

Bearing in mind that a mechanical door closer returns the energy used to open a door to close it again, the more efficient the closer is, the better it will perform, especially important when given reduced opening forces. With an operating efficiency of in excess of 80%, Powermatic® far exceeds the recommendations for efficiency of Approved Document M and BS EN 1154. As such, it is classed as ‘super-efficient’ and is one of the most efficient closers on the market.

Other benefits ensue from the fact that Powermatic® is totally concealed when the door is closed. Enhanced aesthetics are a major factor in the closer’s popularity, as the closer will not have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the door or overall interior.

Vandalism can pose a very real risk to the safety of a building’s occupants, particularly where fire doors are concerned. Powermatic®’s concealed nature presents very little opportunity for the would-be vandal to damage its mechanisms and render the door useless in case of fire

In addition, total concealment and the fact that Powermatic® can be installed towards the bottom of the door jamb also mean that the closer offers a useful solution in anti-ligature situations, further enhancing the product’s safety credentials.

Add to these factors, Powermatic®’s many accreditations for fire performance and durability, together with maintenance free service and a manufacturer’s 10-year guarantee, and it is easy to appreciate why the closer has become the preferred choice in many projects where accessibility and performance are paramount.

SG Systems

Sentinel balustrades tailored to meet your needs

SG System Products tailored the Sentinel balustrade system to provide the balustrade for the internal stair and the external steps and ramp for a primary school in Surrey.

The access balustrade used balusters in satin polished stainless steel grade 316, with blue Stargard warm to the touch handrail, and infill panels of galvanized steel mesh. This resulted in an attractive, functional yet economic design.

The staircase balustrade was also required to have blue upper and lower handrail, therefore the Sentinel system was powder coated blue, but the brackets left as satin polished stainless steel. Infill panels were clear toughened glass and the landing panels were made to have the top edge of the glass higher than the handrail for additional safety.

Sudscape offers unique suds-compliant paving solution

Following recent legislation sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) is close to becoming mandatory, and permeable paving is set to be the norm for all hard surfacing requirements.

Fully SUDS compliant, Sudscapetm is a unique eco-friendly porous paving solution ideal for a vast range of landscaping requirements, and is highly suitable for car parks, pathways and driveways. It is comprised of a rubber sub base made from recycled car tyres which is topped with a resin and aggregate top layer.

Its excellent environmental credentials enable it to contribute substantially to the BREAAM accreditation process, with up to eleven credits available for projects that use it.

By holding water in the voids within the rubber sub base until it can be absorbed back into the water table, the system prevents flash flooding. It also eliminates the risk of standing water , a significant health and safety risk. As it is flexible and porous, water is able to freeze, expand and contract without causing damage. In addition, freeze thaw tests carried out at the BRE Innovation Park have proved that the product does not de-laminate, a typical condition of other resin products when placed on top of concrete or tarmac.

It is the only product tested at BRE‘s Innovation park for over three years to remain porous with no maintenance at all in a wooded environment. The flex ability of the system allows agitation to occur so allowing fines to pass through. Other benefits include easy maintenance and superior aesthetics – Susdcapetm is available in a variety of finishes enabling it to complement the surrounding environment.

Sudscapetm can be used in both commercial and domestic markets. Recent commissions include the provision of 600 sq. metres of open area landscaping for WS Atkins’ Headquarters in Epsom, and 460 sq. metres of hard landscaping for The Olympic Village in the athletes’ accommodation area.

A key consideration for the WS Atkins project was the ability of the Sudscapetm system to provide a specific surface colour that would effortlessly harmonise a brand new building with those already in existence. The system’s low maintenance guarantee was also considered important – Sudscapetm does not require any special cleaning technique, so on-going maintenance costs are negligible.

The Olympic Village project involved hard landscaping a large area of pathways in courtyards surrounding the athletes’ accommodation blocks. The commissioning architect was McFarlane Wilder who were keen to install the system after specifying it on other schemes and experiencing its myriad benefits. Peter Wilder of Macfarlane Wilder comments: “The Athletes’ Village demands a rigorous approach to surface water management through responsibly sourced materials. Sudscapetm is a system that we have encountered through our work on the BRE Innovation Parks where it has proven its credentials as a low carbon alternative to traditional resin bound systems.”

Many of the benefits for living green roofs depend on the plant layer being robust and healthy and for that, an annual maintenance regime is essential.

Enviromat have published a white paper entitled “designing for maintenance”. Aimed at architects and specifiers, the document points out ways in which careful design can ensure that the cost of green roof maintenance is kept to an absolute minimum. Simple things like ensuring safe and easy access to the roof, careful choice of plant palette and appropriate irrigation can make a huge difference to the long-term performance of a green roof.

PermaRock lead the way with Green Deal compliant external wall insulation

With the on-going uncertainty surrounding the Government’s new flagship energy efficiency initiative, the Green Deal – due for launch in October 2012, it is good to hear that at least one company is geared up and ready to supply fully compliant external (solid) wall insulation systems, a key measure under the Green Deal and the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).

PermaRock, one of the UK’s longest established and leading external wall insulation system suppliers, has continued to focus investment to ensure that all their key external wall insulation systems are fully Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (ECO) compliant and meet all the requirements set out in the Draft Code of Practice.

This investment has led to the recent award and publication of a new certificate (No. 158/12) by UKAS accredited body the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

BRE Certificate No. 158/12 reflects PermaRock’s constant commitment to the quality of it’s lead products and expands on their previous scope of accredited external wall insulation and render systems, placing PermaRock in a strong position to supply external (solid) wall insulation systems under Green Deal and ECO.

The certificate provides accreditation for mineral fibre, phenolic, EPS and EPS-premium (Grey) based external wall insulation systems with acrylic and silicone-based through-coloured renders, traditional dashing stone, brick effect render, brick slips and lime-based render decorative finishes.

Under the requirements set out under the Green Deal, Green Deal Providers and Installers will only be able to install products and systems as defined within the scope of their certification. In the case of external wall insulation, ETA or UKAS certificated systems can be installed only onto the wall construction types for which they are accredited. They must also comply with all applicable European and Domestic legislation relevant to the testing, performance, and quality of the system.

For PermaRock, BRE Certificate 158/12, permits installation of their key external wall insulation systems onto nearly all traditional and non-traditional substrate types, including, masonry (brick / block), dense and no-fines concrete (PRC) and sheathed light gauge steel frame and timber frame constructions.

If you would like further information on PermaRock’s latest accreditation or would like to discuss how they can work with you under Green Deal and ECO then contact PermaRock on (T) 01509 262924 or by visiting www.permarock.com.

East Beach car park at Shoeburyness in Essex, offers year round parking for visitors

The East Beach car park at Shoeburyness in Essex, offers year round parking for visitors to the beach and local amenities.

The grassed overflow car park is well used, but has historically suffered with the problem of vehicles wearing away the grass and creating ruts, and with the area becoming muddy, unsightly and generally unpleasant in both wet and dry conditions.

In 2010 GRASSPROTECTA (Heavy) was specified, as it met all the remedial requirements. It is a heavy-duty, thick, slip-resistant polyethylene mesh designed for reinforcing and protecting grassed surfaces prone to wear, rutting and smearing, which can result in a muddy surface incapable of withstanding vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

Fiberweb's GRASSPROTECTA grass reinforcement mesh has been has been developed with an oscillated mesh structure which is designed to increase traction and improve slip resistance by up to 97% compared to standard straight oriented meshes.

During installation at East Beach, ruts were first levelled with soil and seeded; the mesh was then unrolled and pinned to the surface using metal pins. Over several weeks the grass sward was able to grow naturally through, and intertwine with the plastic mesh filaments creating a strong, discreetly reinforced natural grass surface capable of withstanding vehicle loads and limiting damage.

Martin Warren, Development Engineer, from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council commented:

"We were delighted with the results of the installation two years ago, and are happy to say that GRASSPROTECTA has stood the test of time and still looks great and is performing well today after two years heavy usage. We are proud to be able to welcome our visitors to East Beach with a pleasant, well maintained facility.

Additionally, we have now installed GRASSPROTECTA in another car parking facility in the region, and have recommended it to other neighbouring councils suffering from similar issues with car parking, and are aware it has been used in an installation in Sussex. We have also used BODPAVE 85 on another successful ground reinforcement project in Southend-on-Sea."
